the PEOPLE’S RENT PARTY

Art is not neutral.

It either upholds or disrupts the status quo,

advancing or regressing justice. We are now living inside the imagination of people who thought economic disparity and environmental destruction were acceptable costs for their power. It is our right and our responsibility to write ourselves into the future. All organizing is science fiction if you are shaping the future, you are a futurist, and visionary fiction is a way to practice the future in our minds - alone and together.

FOR THE PEOPLE

With the support of the Community Justice Project - The People's Rent Party threw two mutual aid performances in an effort to raise emergency funds for the people of Miami, FL in the summer of 2020. This community series was created and organized by Desiree during her time as the organization’s first-ever Artist-In-Residence.

Rent Party 1 worked in partnership with WeCount to distribute $11,074.75 of raised funds to farmworkers, nursery workers, day laborers, & domestic workers in Homestead, FL.

Rent Party 2 worked in partnership with community leader, Emani Castillo to distribute fifteen $500 emergency stipends to black trans women in need of assistance, for a fundraiser total of $7,565.

For generations, the American housing system has disproportionately displaced black, brown, indigenous, and immigrant communities. Many needed help before COVID 19 and now, thousands are dealing with insecure housing as a result of being out of work with little or no financial support.

Inspired by the Rent Parties held during the Harlem Renaissance, “The People’s Rent Party”  was created to raise money for our people to pay some bills, explore the meaning of home, and highlight the immediate need for protecting the human rights of vulnerable communities.
